77
more acres conserved in Corinth, VT!
This
large wetland and its diverse woodland buffer on the “Ravenwood” property in western Corinth is now
protected with a conservation easement granted to UVLT by landowner
Judith Taylor on December 14, 2012 (See a photo from the happy
occasion here on our Facebook page). Moose, bear,
deer, fisher and of course the industrious beaver all benefit from
the habitat on this property which is part of a conservation
initiative in the Orange County Headwaters region - nearly 6,500
acres of conserved or public lands lie within 5 miles of this
property! The Ravenwood project was
funded with a grant from the Upper Connecticut River Mitigation and Enhancement
Fund which
helps permanently protect wetlands and other important surface water
resources.
Upper
Valley Attitude?
A
recent poll found that two thirds of Upper Valley residents strongly
agree with the statement: "We must invest in land conservation
to protect the Upper Valley's quality of life for future
generations." The telephone survey of 430 randomly selected
households was conducted for UVLT in late November by the UNH Survey
Center. More than 90% of those contacted supported investment in land
conservation. 86% felt that "protecting land, water and wildlife
in the Upper Valley is critical to our economy and helps area
businesses. A similar percentage agreed that "some of our
forests and farmland are being lost to development and we should take
steps to preserve them before they are lost forever."

Poet,
Ecologist, Writer Janisse Ray is Coming!
‘The river is stunning, a midnight blue
marbled with amber tannins. It reminds me of a tortoiseshell comb
running through white-sand hair. Its sand banks are strong with
roots, and from them grow live oak, cypress, palmetto, willow, red
maple, sweet gum. How could anybody look once at the Saint Marys River and not fall in love with it? It
flows straight into a yearning hole in my heart.’
~From
Pinhook, Finding Wholeness in a Fragmented
Land
Her
stories and the hard information she shares are a powerful,
