UVLT's Piano on the Dartmouth Green

'Hands and Lands in Harmony'

UVLT was chosen as one of 50 Upper Valley artiststo create a piano for the Hopkins Center for the Arts Hands on Pianos project.  This part artistic installation-part street art project was created in celebration of the HOP's 50th Anniversary.  The UVLT piano was a fun collaboration of staff, family, and friends - thank you all - and we are happy to share the outcome with everyone!  The title of our piano is "Hands and Lands in Harmony" and you can see a slideshow of our progress here as well as on the HOP website.

The UVLT piano will be on the Dartmouth Green for the month of July.  Head on over and take a look, sign our logbook, or take a seat and play!

Upper Valley Naturalist Training Graduates

2012 Upper Valley Naturalist Training Graduates 15 New Certified Naturalists

On the last Sunday in May, 15 people graduated from the first ever Upper Valley Naturalist Training Program! The training was a collaboration between UVLT andVINS

and was sponsored in part by a grant from the Wellborn Ecology FundNorthern Woodlands generously donated copies of their book, The Outside Story, to be used as part of the training.

The UVNT Program was a 4 week training consisting evening classroom sessions and weekend field sessions. Local experts were recruited to lead sessions on topics including geology of the Upper Valley region, plant communities, invasive species, birds, animal tracks and signs, wetland ecology, forest ecology, interpretive techniques and human interactions and impacts.

The hope is that graduates will go on to help educate their communities about nature in the Upper Valley and that some will volunteer as docents and field guides for local nature conservation organizations.

UVLT and VINS hope to offer the training again next year and there are plans for supplemental trainingwith more focused field sessions on select topics this fall.  This training would serve to enrich Upper Valley Naturalists' knowledge and will also be open to the public.  Stay tuned for updates!

Rumor had it that 2012 was going to be a bad year for ticks.  The problem with rumors is that you don't know who to believe.  Faced with uncertainty UVLT's Anna Slack spent some time forging some personal 'best management practices' for ticks.  Turns out preparation is no match for personal experience - read what happened to Anna and how the ticks of 2012 are impacting fashion trends of this year's outdoor season!
