First of their Kind! Landowners of the recently donated Orange Pond property.

The Nature of Risk

This project is the first UVLT-conserved property in the town of Orange, NH!  OnFebruary 3rd landowners Jim Collins and Kristen Laine donated a conservation easement on 118 acres of their property, protecting a large undeveloped stretch of shoreline on Orange Pond and significant upland forests.

The property has nearly a thousand feet of frontage on the popular trout-fishing pond adjacent to Cardigan Mountain State Forest.  The State Forest land lies directly across the water from the protected property, and only three other landowners have frontage on this water body, making it relatively undeveloped and supportive of wildlife and quiet recreational opportunity.

Kristen & Jim (pictured above) both relish the quiet nature of the pond, and acknowledge the fragility of it too.  Hear it in their own words as Kristen shares the story of protecting this “extraordinarily wild and beautiful place” for their family, future families, and the many creatures sharing the land with them.

Summer 2012 Patchen Miller Internship Available

Patchen Miller cared for the natural world and all of its inhabitants, including human communities. After his tragic death, at 26, UVLT established an internship to honor his life. Patchen celebrated discovery and exploration while also joyfully sharing his knowledge with others.

The Patchen Miller internship provides an opportunity for applicants to propose a project that furthers UVLT’s work in stewardship, environmental education or community outreach. Creativity and interdisciplinary approaches welcome!

Click here for more information and application guidelines.

Applications for the summer 2012 internship are due April 13th.

Ally Bernstein, the 2011 recipient, shares her experience here.
