Hands on the Land: Trail Improvements at Zebedee Wetland

The Linny Levin Trail at Zebedee Wetland in Thetford has undergone significant improvements, thanks to one of our largest trail projects this year. Over a two-day effort, students from Thetford Academy, members of the Thetford Conservation Commission, and the Thetford Trails Team joined forces with volunteers to rebuild the numerous bog bridges along the ¾-mile trail. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our neighbors who allowed us to stage construction materials and to everyone who came together to keep this cherished area welcoming and accessible.

Many volunteers, including the students from Thetford Academy, have a deep connection to the wetland and were thrilled to give back to the land that has provided them with moments of tranquility in nature. Cassie Bernyk, UVLT Stewardship Programs Coordinator, spoke with Marissa, a 16-year-old student from TA, who fondly recalled her visits to Zebedee Wetland during her 2nd and 3rd grade classes at Thetford Elementary School. She vividly remembers her special ‘sit spot’ in the woods surrounding the wetland. For years, teachers at TES have utilized the Zebedee area to enhance their curriculum with wetland and forest studies. A beloved activity encourages students to choose a spot off the trail where they can sit quietly and immerse themselves in the surrounding nature. This practice left a lasting impression on Marissa, who now continues the ‘sit spot’ tradition in her own backyard. With the recent upgrades to the Linny Levin Trail, we are excited to ensure that many more students and community members can visit and connect with this beautiful land for years to come.
