Land Description
The 71.5-acre Crowell Conservation Area is 71.5 acres of northern hardwood and mixed forest located within a half mile of Canaan’s elementary school. This area contains multiple vernal pools and a seasonal stream. It is adjacent to and provides access for, a landlocked Town-owned parcel that contains portions of a significant wetland and heron rookery. Jim and Debbie Crowell, long-time residents of Canaan, were deeply committed to protecting the ecological integrity of their land. Debbie was a wonderful botanist and photographer who led wildflower walks for UVLT and the Canaan Conservation Commission in the 1990’s. The Crowells donated a conservation easement in 2004. Then twenty years later, their children donated the land outright to UVLT and named the area for their parents.
UVLT’s land management focuses on preserving natural areas, safeguarding water quality, and supporting wildlife habitats. Under UVLT’s ownership, the Crowell Woodlands will be given improved recreational infrastructure including a hiking trail, parking area, and bench. UVLT will monitor the land’s health and work to maintain its biodiversity. As Canaan grows, the Crowell Conservation Area will remain a vital, protected space for the health and resilience of people and nature.
