My Walden

Botanist and writer Harriet Jackson Phelps owned the land in the 1960’s and 1970’s and published a book of poetry and photographs about the place she called My Walden. Shiela and Steven Swett became the owners in 1986. Inspired by Phelps, and by the land itself, they maintained the high grassy openings with views to distant mountains. They searched for, and documented the hundreds of plants species Phelps had cataloged. They kept forest roads clear for walkers and skiers. They welcomed all who appreciate the land.

The Swetts decided early in their ownership that they would not erect written messages for those who walk the property. Instead, they explained, “We relied on the unspoken values of courtesy, common sense, and respect for the land.”

After 40 years of care, the Swetts wanted to continue the legacy of stewardship and public enjoyment of this remarkable place. In October 2024, the property was donated to UVLT. Neighbors and friends contributed to a $420,000 endowment campaign to provide for the management of roads, trails, woods and fields as Steve and Shiela Swett did with such love.
