Two Exciting End of Summer Events

We have two exciting events in store for the last week of August!

On Tuesday August 27th at 5:30pm UVLT is holding an evening loon paddle at Smith Pond Shaker Forest. Smith Pond is a remote pond in Enfield, NH, that is usually closed off to boaters of any kind to protect its fragile ecosystem and wildlife habitat. UVLT is providing this one time, special opportunity to bring 20 paddlers out onto the pond to learn about the history of the land, the ecology of the nesting loons who have recently come back to the pond, and UVLT’s goals for the property in the future.

Kingswood Camp for Boys, out of Piermont, is providing the canoes for the trip so no gear is required. We will have paddles and life jackets available.

Tickets for the Loon Paddle are $25 per person and spaces are filling up fast! Call the UVLT office at (603) 643-6626 to reserve a spot today.

Then on Friday the 30th we will hold our second special event: our end of summer Star Gazing Party at Mountain View Farm in Orford, NH. Join UVLT and local astronomer and telescope builder David Russ as we explore the cosmos from this special location.

One of the telescopes

Mountain View Farm is located in the Quinttown region of Orford in a remote location where no light pollution penetrates the night sky and no sign of the modern world can be seen from its fields. The 360 degree views include Cube and Smarts in the distance and a wide swath of sky. David Russ is providing two of his large telescopes to help us see far off galaxies. He and UVLT’s Vice President of Stewardship and Strategic Initiatives John Roe will guide us on a journey through the stars.

This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided. Join us at 7:30, bring a picnic and a blanket and watch the sunset. Then the real fun begins as the night grows darker. This event ends at 10:30pm.

You can always call the UVLT office at (603) 643-6626 with any questions about upcoming events, or email Programs Director Alison Marchione at alison.marchione@uvlt.org. Full descriptions of all of our events are always available on our website calendar.
