Old is New, On the River

In October 1987, UVLT accepted its first conservation easement, a deed that protected 28 acres of land with about a mile of frontage on the meandering Sugar River in Croydon. Thirty-five years later, the members of the partnership that owned the property have chosen to give it outright to UVLT. And so, this month, our oldest conservation project is simultaneously our newest!

The Sugar River is a blue ribbon trout stream, stocked by the State of New Hampshire and well used for fishing. The gifted property mostly consists of wet meadow, old pasture and wetland running between Route 10 and the River. A roadside pull off provides access at the southern corner of the property.

Jason Berard, Vice President Stewardship, says that accepting the gift means new visibility for this stretch of river. As the owner, UVLT intends to steward and promote this property as access to the Sugar River for fishing, birdwatching and paddling. “It’s a sweet spot with lots of birds and good fishing too. We’re glad to own it.”
