Zebedee Wetland

Land Description

Zebedee Wetland is renowned by bird-watchers and wildlife enthusiasts. Situated off Houghton Hill Road in Thetford, the 27-acre property was acquired and conserved in 2010 with a huge outpouring of community support. The large wetland on this property also serves as a living outdoor classroom for local schoolchildren. Its proximity to both Thetford Elementary School and Thetford Academy serves as a critical resource for natural science educators. In recent years, the second-grade curriculum at the elementary school has included wetland and forest studies conducted on the property.

Trail Description

UVLT and the Thetford Conservation Commission have partnered to create a walking trail in memory of local naturalist and educator, Linny Levin. The .75 mile Linny Levin Trail is mostly flat. It encircles the wetland and offers several spurs to vantage points looking over the beaver-maintained pond system. There are benches in several locations to listen or view birds and wildlife. Linny’s inspiration touches us here through the calls of the frogs, the plumage of the visiting birds, and the determined activity of the beaver.

This trail can be wet, with some uneven footings and stream crossings and many feet of bog bridges.

Directions

From Route 113 in Thetford (Exit 14 off I-91) turn north on Houghton Hill Road. Parking for Zebedee Wetland is on the road shoulder after about .35 miles. A green metal gate marks the entry to the property and the trailhead kiosk is beyond the gate.

Zebedee Wetland Educational Activity Guide

Intended for families with children ages 5-10, all of the activities included in this guide can be done with simply a piece of paper, a pen, and an imagination. The 6 activities included in the guide range from topics in mindfulness to ecosystems and wildlife. Spots along the trail are selected specifically for each activity.The guide was created with the help of Joanna Waldman and Connie Snyder, who shared many great ideas for activities and provided much of the background on Thetford’s outdoor education programs.

What an incredible hike at Cottonstone this past Saturday! We were thrilled to have 36 people join us for this beautiful fall-weather adventure. 🍂

We were treated to stunning views down the CT River, featuring Morey Mountain and the picturesque Orford/Fairlee Bridge in the foreground. In the distance, you can catch glimpses of Killington, Pico, and Ascutney.

A huge shoutout to the Orford Conservation Commission for co-hosting this event, and to Heidi Wilson for graciously opening her UVLT-conserved property for us!

🍂 With near-peak foliage, tomorrow (Saturday, 10/12) is shaping up to be a beautiful day for a hike! 🍂

Join the Upper Valley Land Trust and the Orford Conservation Commission for a special hike up Cottonstone, a prominent peak located in Orford, NH.

We’ll explore the intriguing origin of this name while soaking in stunning views of the river, including the iconic Fairlee/Orford Bridge. Along the way, we’ll take breaks to discover the natural wonders that make this hike truly special.

We’ll gain 800 feet in elevation on a network of wooded roads, leading us to one of the spectacular vistas along the ridge. The hike is approximately 3 miles long and will take about 3 hours in total.
