Meet UVLT’s 2021 Summer Interns
Each summer UVLT works with student interns on projects that are of interest to them and beneficial to UVLT. This year we have two fantastic interns starting with us this month and working with us throughout the summer.
Karina Ricker – Patchen Miller Intern
The Patchen Miller Internship at UVLT embraces the science, stewardship and sense of community involved in land conservation. A Patchen Miller intern has the unique opportunity to work in the conservation field while gaining valuable experience with a nonprofit organization. The Patchen Miller Internship was developed to honor the life of Patchen Miller. More about Patchen can be found here.
This year the Patchen Miller internship is dedicated to working with UVLT’s community impact programming. This will include supporting our Food Pantry Gardens in Charlestown NH and Norwich, VT and assisting with the launch of our Community Woodshed in Sullivan County, NH as well as other community service initiatives.
Karina, our Patchen Miller Intern, grew up in Orford and is happy to be back in the Upper Valley for another summer, especially since the pandemic reminded her how much she loves being back home. She just completed her 3rd year studying Biology and Contemporary Studies at Dalhousie University up in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Karina enjoys hiking, playing music, reading, and exploring the out-of-doors. She’s excited to spend the summer outside working in the Brookmead and Up on the Hill gardens!
Grace Cooke – Stewardship Intern
Grace will be a senior at North Carolina State University in the fall where she is studying environmental science and geology. She grew up in Lyme, New Hampshire where she now spends her summers. She spent the last two summers enjoying her work at the Montshire Museum of Science in Norwich, VT and when not working she spends her time with friends, family and little dog Greta. This summer Grace is working with the stewardship department on the Brookmead Conservation Area in Norwich doing ecological research. She is looking forward to gaining field experience, learning important new skills such as using GPS software to map invasive species and wetland delineation, as well as getting to know new people who have similar interests.
