Summer in the Woods

This summer I’m interning with the Upper Valley Land Trust as a seasonal land steward! As a steward, my day-day changes a lot: sometimes you can find me in the office going over files and writing reports and on other days I’ll be out in the woods monitoring a property. I’ve had the opportunity to walk with a few landowners which has been wonderful, but usually my only company is me, myself, and I. Unless of course you count deer, squirrels, chipmunks, birds, an endless amount of bugs… oh and bears. Maybe it’s just an intern’s bad luck or this summer is a bear’s paradise, but I’ve already had a few encounters with our fuzzy black mammal friends. Because of this I thought I’d freshen up on my knowledge of ursus americanus.

A Year-Round Commitment to Farmland Conservation

Cold temperatures and snowfall may mark the end of harvest season but here at UVLT, work with agriculture is busier than ever! Our staff is currently working with owners of ten farmland parcels encompassing hundreds of acres of our region’s best agricultural land.

Paradee Property is Conserved

On June 14, 2023, the Paradee property, located in Orford, NH, was graciously conserved by Linda Paradee who donated a conservation easement. This parcel, situated on the banks of the Connecticut River has been in Linda's family since the 1800s.

This tool doesn’t replace the expert advice of your personal attorney -- you can use it to create a draft for review and discussion with your attorney, or if you prefer, write a simple will to execute as Amber did. Firewood Assistance in NH

Last month, UVLT took steps to duplicate the Woodshed’s program and bring similar firewood assistance opportunities to NH. Due to strict exterior firewood quarantine guidelines in the state, the UVLT team headed to Up on the Hill in Charlestown, NH, to begin harvesting trees for the new program, hoping to officially launch and deliver to recipients in Fall 2023 (once harvested wood has dried sufficiently).
